"When are you chatting with the Haim sisters?" an inquiry reads. "My request was to ask if I can join as their fourth member."

However, there remains a key snag: I also desires to be the Haims' additional sibling. What's more, we are in plentiful company. Several celebrated fans have openly begged for the honor.

It's clear an irresistible appeal is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their musical journey playing gigs at small eateries with their parents. Today, they are multi-time Grammy contenders.

In the tradition of the greatest ensembles, they're a close gang. Their visuals repeatedly feature them walking in harmony down the roads of Los Angeles. In concert, they perform with such pure joy you inevitably think, "I'd love to be a piece of that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that young girls told us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I got a drum kit'," says Alana, the most junior of the trio. "That's the biggest compliment. It is a prize in itself. We have succeeded if we can inspire people to form a group."

"And thus all is invited to be the honorary member of Haim."

Historic Recognition

The group have called into a break, where they're resting up after an lengthy tour in promoting their new album, I Quit.

They're currently celebrating the news it's been nominated for Best Rock Album at the Grammys – with Haim the first all-female band ever in the running for the trophy.

"I tune into the lists every year, so it sort of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is announced," notes Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The weight of the accolade resonates with the band.

"We really set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a significant milestone," says Alana. "But we're just appreciative for the women that inspired us."

Personal Turmoil and Candor

The record came out of a phase of personal change. All three sisters ended up single, and the music captures that strange transitional period where you're happy to be free, but not entirely ready to start anew.

The words follow breakups and partings. The sisters want love, but not the relationships they've experienced. You can hear them determining in the moment who they want to be.

"I adore summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a slogan. You have to make an effort in blocking the criticism and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Development of Style

That recent resilience called for a fresh approach – more unpolished and powerful than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that began with the drum sound.

"Drums are such a specific thing, and I am so passionate about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our memoir," quips Alana. "Our motto is, our albums cannot begin until we find the perfect drum sound."

Stories and Collective Humor

The trio's candor shaped the album's rollout, where the sisters disclosed some of their romantic tales.

Someone left Este over a medical consideration. Alana told a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"During these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no light," notes Alana. "So to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's so amazing."

A Secure Future

You can clearly sense a shift in the band. These days, Haim are more certain of their place in the music world.

They're festival headliners, with hit albums and an worldwide following.

But the band will always be their number one priority.

"My sisters and I have been performing since I was little," concludes Alana. "It feels as if no alternative that we were destined for. And I'm really grateful we've reached this point and we're still kicking."
